"Juliana Lamm-Perez, a volunteer lead with the Richmond District chapter of the influential YIMBY Action advocacy group, argues that the current list of proposals for District 1 goes too far.
“It is a cynical attempt to continue to encase this city in amber and prevent future generations from being able to grow up, build their lives and flourish here,” she wrote by email.
Within the District 1 batch, Lamm-Perez singled out the landmark proposal for 389 9th Ave. The brick building — built in 1924 to house a Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company switching station — is under consideration due to its eye-catching architecture, defined by red brick masonry built in a classical revival style, city planners said.
Today, the office building appears to be in use by AT&T, but Lamm-Perez argues that if it ever goes on the market, “we should be able to convert it into desperately needed housing as fast as possible, and not have to wade through decades of red tape to do so.”
